My son is a gamer and had an uninvited guest in one of his games. Since he and his buddies had no knowledge of the guest, they kicked the kid out of the game. I’m not a gamer so I don’t know how this is done or any specifics. The kid then retaliates and told my son that his internet connection (including my iPad and home & work PCs) will be disabled for two hours.

I thought no way in hell could this happen but the little fucker did it. I talked with my son and looked up some things. I may not have the terminology correct but he and his friends called the kid a “booter” who can launch some kind of DDoS/Stresser attack once they get your IP address. The kid did it in seconds. I've not heard of this before but apparently it occurs a lot in the gaming community and has happened to several of my son's friends where their internet connection was shut down for a day or even a week.

How can this be avoided in the future? Settings in the modem? How concerned should I be and should I call my ISP provider who I just started with 3 days ago?

Unplug the modem for about an hour or so. When it reconnects it gets a new IP from the DHCP server so you cannot get DDOS'ed again. DDOS stands for Direct Denial of Service. Basically got ping flooded out.

An IP stresser is a tool designed to test a network or server for robustness. The administrator may run a stress test in order to determine whether the existing resources (bandwidth, CPU, etc.) are sufficient to handle additional load. FiberStresser is a reliable and hard hitting IP stresser. It's the only stresser in the market that gives you powerful stress tests for less. FiberStresser - Best Booter / IP Stresser.

Most ISP's will protect against this if they detect it and will block the DDOS from happening. Really nothing else you can do now days other than unplug the modem for a bit and plug it back it. If you have the kids IP it really isn't hard to DDOS him back with a simple command yet make sure that it doesn't violate you ISP T&C.
